Freestyle Motocross: The world’s 12 best Freestyle motocross riders took to the air 24 hours before the start of the 2011 season opener of the Red Bull X Fighters World Tour in Dubai (UAE) on Thursday in the Qualifying session.
Andre Villa from Norway, who was on 2nd place in the 2010 World Tour, took top honors in the Qualifying. Six riders (inclusive Villa) earned a pass through the first round in Friday’s main event (8 p.m. local time) thanks to their strong performances in the Qualifying. About 15,000 fans are expected to pack Jumeirah Beach in Dubai on Friday. Defending champion Nate Adams (USA) is the favorite.
DUBAI (UAE) – Adams won the 2010 overall championship even though he did not win a single event last year. “It pays to be consistent,” Adams explained. “I got on the podium at every competition. Except for Madrid, where I couldn’t take part because I was injured.”
As the season opener in Dubai on Friday evening drew near, there was a growing sense of nervousness among the riders – and also a sense that everyone is keeping a close eye on the competition. Who mastered new tricks during the winter break? Or who switched to an even more powerful bike? Or who switched teams?
Adams said: “I tried to prepare perfectly for this season. Obviously you keep an eye on what your rivals are up to. But only those who worked hard over the winter are going to be successful.”
Many Freestyle Motocross experts consider Adams to be among the top favorites this year.
Red Bull X-Fighters sporting director Tes Sewell (UK) said: “In retrospect, there were five or six different riders who could have won the Tour last year. It was more exciting than ever before and the season wasn’t decided until the final in Rome.”
Sewell is reluctant to make any predictions about who will be the one to beat in the new season that starts tomorrow night. “The important thing is that it’s exciting. The field has become so incredibly competitive and the gap among the riders has all but disappeared. At the end of the day, it’s going to depend on who manages to puts it all together at the right moment.”
The bookmakers have identified Andre Villa (NOR) as well as Levi Sherwood as potential title winners. The Norwegian Villa won an Red Bull X-Fighters event for the first time in 2010 and was only just beaten for the overall championship in a nerve-wracking final in Italy (Rome) by Adams. Levi Sherwood (NZL) won in both Moscow and London.
Adams put it all in perspective: “It’s almost impossible to know who’s going to do well this year before the first competition here.”
Jackson Strong (AUS) crashed heavily in Qualifying. While performing a backflip he over-rotated and wasn’t able to stay on the bike as it landed. He suffered only slight injuries.
After the London stop of Red Bull X-Fighters, the overall tour title was a four-way race. Forty-five points out of first, Robbie Maddison had an outside chance and was riding well enough to be considered.
Rider: Andre Villa
Only 20 points separated these Pro Freestyle Motocross Riders Levi Sherwood in third and Andre Villa in first, with last year’s champion Nate Adams standing between them.
But they say bad things come in threes, and recently that’s been more than true for several of the competitors considered to be in the hunt for the sixth and final stop of this year’s tour.
First to fall victim to circumstance was New Zealand’s Sherwood. At ASA’s annual event in Pomona, Calif., Sherwood was looking in dominant form when he jumped into the first part of a tight double-double section. In this kind of two-jump set, the landing becomes the take-off approach for the second dirt hit.
The rider usually lands and then powers up the next take off, losing none of the momentum from the first jump. In Sherwood’s case he landed and somehow his left foot hit the shifter, dropping the bike into neutral. The young Kiwi twisted the throttle, the bike gave out a mournful wail but created no forward momentum.
Sherwood’s speed and trajectory propelled him into the back of the next landing, breaking his femur and shattering his chances of this year’s X-Fighters Tour crown. Given that he’d won two of the last three stops, Sherwood was the odds-on favorite coming into Rome.
The undisputed Godfather of FMX, Mike Metzger has confirmed he will return to Australia for the first time in nearly 10 years, leading the strongest line-up of international riders down under for the Crusty Demons Thirst 4 Destruction action sports spectacular.
Metzger will be joined on the Crusty Demons Thirst 4 Destruction tour, presented by Woodstock Bourbon, by some of world’s best FMX riders, including yesterday’s Dew Tour (Salt Lake City) winner Taka Higashino and runner-up Mike Mason.
Between the eight confirmed international riders, they boast over 30 X-Games medals, multiple world records and over 100 international FMX titles.
Acknowledging the opportunity to work with one of the world’s top 20 promoters, Dainty Consolidated Entertainment, was a key factor in luring him back on tour with the Crusty Demons, Mike Metzger said he was excited at the direction the new tour was taking.
“I can t wait to get out there for the Crusty Demons tour. I have been wanting to get back to Australia for a lot of years but it hasn’t worked out before,” said Metzger. “I guess almost 10 years on is the right time to head back, it has a nice fit and it feels right. The line-up in insane and the show plan itself is something I just had to be part of.
“Australia is kind of where we really first lit the world on fire with Freestyle Motocross. It was ridiculous how the fans really took to it. It is fitting that this tour sees us go back to dirt and celebrate the history of the Crusty Demons,” Metzger concluded.
The rider line-up resembles a who’s who of FMX with the top echelon of the sport signing up to be part of this history making tour.
Nate Adams (12 times X Games Medalist), Adam Jones (8-time X-Games medalist), Taka Higashino (current X- Games Best Trick bronze medalist & Dew Tour SLC winner) Mike Mason (multiple X-Games medalist) and Beau Bamburg (multiple FMX title holder) cement the impressive rider line-up that will come together in less than a months time for the first show in Perth.
Higashino, who is being hailed by his peers as the best rider in the world at the moment, won yesterday’s Dew Tour Salt Lake City final ahead of fellow Crusty Demon’s rider Mike Mason.
Freestyle Motocross was back in competition form in Salt Lake City for the fourth stop of the Alli Sports Dew Tour.
This was the first time in nearly two years that there has been an actual competition instead of the demo format that was used throughout 2009.
Everyone was fired up and hungry to compete in front of a pack house in downtown Salt Lake City on a Saturday night.
The competition was a head-to-head format, with the winner moving onto the next round. Twitch and Faisst were pre-qualified for the event based off of 2008 point standings and a wild card spot.
Twitch, Potter, Taka, and Adelberg all eliminated their opponent in the first round, allowing them to advance to the second round.
In round 2, Potter and Twitch did battle to see who would move onto the quarter finals.
Both had solid runs with big flip combos, but Twitch just edged out Potter to advance on. Adelberg had a scary get off in his run when he hit neutral as he was approaching the dirt double out of the double double section.
Mays Landing native Ronnie Faisst will never forget this year’s X-Games 16 competition.
Faisst left the X-Games 16 at Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday thinking he had narrowly missed out on the chance to finish in the top three in the Moto X Speed & Style event, which combines motorcycle racing with tricks. He was wrong.
A review of Faisst’s bronze medal race with fellow Metal Mulisha team member Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg revealed that the checkered flag was raised one lap too early.
When race officials realized their error, it was too late to re-run the race, so to be fair, both Faisst and Stenberg were given bronze medals, according to ESPN officials.
It was a solid result for Faisst, who wasn’t even officially in the event until Thursday. Faisst was in his hotel room when the call came letting him know the decision was made to award each rider the bronze.
“They called me, like, an hour later,” Faisst said in a phone interview from California on Wednesday. “It was cool to get a medal but at the same time, I didn’t even feel like I had won a medal. I didn’t really get to share the victory and be on the podium at X-Games 16. It was like, ‘OK I got a medal,’ but I really would have been pumped to win that race and know that it was 100 percent mine.”
Faisst took a half-lap lead when Stenberg fell, but Stenberg caught back up and took the lead after Faisst’s bike stalled out on the course.
In the confusion of the race, the flagger gave the checkered flag on the third lap and not the fourth and final time around the course.
Stenberg jumped off his bike and tossed it over the final jump, basically wrecking the bike. And with Stenberg on top of the landing spot off the final jump, Faisst simply rode over the final jump and figured the race must be over.
Stenberg went and stood on the podium and received his bronze.
A little time later, race officials figured things out and corrected their decision.
“My medal is in the mail,” Faisst said, jokingly. “But it’s better than nothing. It’s better than them saying, ‘OK, you’re fourth and we don’t care.’ At least X Games is stepping up and saying we made a mistake and this is the only way we can correct it.”
Faisst was in the hotel room spending time with his dad Ron, sister Dawn, niece Kiera and cousin Chuck after the race when he found out.
Travis Pastrana earned his seventh Moto X Freestyle gold medal at the Los Angeles Coliseum Thursday night — the same place he won his fourth in 2003. Despite persistent rumors that Pastrana would bring his double backflip, which he’s only thrown in a Best Trick competition once (at X-Games in 2006), to Thursday’s Final, the trick wasn’t necessary.
X-Games 16, Pastrana doing a double backflip
Pastrana took the lead on his first of three runs, which included relatively stock tricks like a nac nac backflip and an Indian air backflip, but it was his creative use of the course that really distinguished him.
Pastrana threw backflips off the smallest features and used the wallride to spectacular effect, gaining easily eight or more feet than his competitors.
Pastrana, then, surprised just about everyone in attendance with a double backflip, the trick that made him a star.”That was for the fans,” a giddy Pastrana said after his opening night victory.
Eighteen-year-old New Zealander Levi Sherwood was the only rider to challenge Pastrana, coming within two points on his second run, but his score wasn’t enough.
When no rider could best Pastrana on their third and final run, the champ was left to a victory lap. Unprompted and with no need to throw anything to secure victory, Pastrana nevertheless took to the course and tossed a flawless double backflip for the crowd, which responded with a roar.
Pastrana came to X16 hoping to compete in a record five events, but chose to pull out of Friday’s Moto X Best Trick due to complications landing his rodeo 720, the “TP Roll.” Nevertheless, Thursday night’s medal gives him an astonishing 16 total X Games medals in both Moto X and Rally Car Racing.”This wasn’t the one I expected to win,” Pastrana said.
Pastrana will also compete in Rally Car Racing and SuperRally on Saturday, as well as Moto X Speed and Style on Sunday.
After putting on a high-profile showing during Best Whip and Super Moto at X Games 15, AMA Motocross and Supercross champion James Stewart has made the last-minute decision to pull out of X-Games 16. Locked into Best Whip, Super X and Speed & Style for 2010, Stewart had the potential to be a triple threat gold medal winner.
Remounting his bike less than a month ago after breaking the scaphoid bone in his right hand after an altercation with Chad Reed during Phoenix round of the ’10 Monster Energy AMA Supercross series on January 17, Stewart decided it would be in his best interest to pass on X-Games 16 in order to focus his attention on racing the Outdoor Nationals.
Making a much-anticipated comeback on August 14 at the Unadilla round of the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship, Stewart is in full training mode in order to reclaim his clout on the track.
“I’m working hard every day in the gym, and I’m also starting to ride more and more in hopes of making a strong comeback before the end of the Nationals,” Stewart stated on the popular motocross radio show, DMXS Radio. He finished, “My goal right now is to make it back for the last four races [Unadilla, Southwick, Steel City, and Pala] — that’s the hope — but we are assessing my riding everyday to see if that time frame is actually possible.”
His presence at X-Games 16 will obviously be missed — especially since we were looking forward to round two of the Stewart vs. Todd Potter Best Whip showdown — but as always, the show will go on … and what a show it’ll be.

Moscow’s historical Red Square brought 40,000 fans on Saturday night to watch the twelve best freestyle motocross riders compete in this third stop of the Red Bull Moto X-Fighters World Tour.
Nate Adams and Levi Sherwood battled it out in the final match up, and Victory went to 18-year-old New Zealand native Levi Sherwood.
The Red Square is a world-famous location. located in Russia’s capital city, they turned it into an FMX course like no other for the event. 250 loads of dirt buried the historic streets to set the scene for a legendary event that will not soon be forgotten.
Sherwood weighed in on the competition: “The tricky course here was just right for me. This day will go down in history.” To take the persuading win, Sherwood threw down his deep collection of super extended tricks without flaw, like his crazy ruler flip and seat grab Indy flip.
With skyrocketing temperatures and a sold-out crowd, the conditions were not favorable for most. Adams, who came in second to the young gun Sherwood explained, “The pressure was huge, the course was tough and the heat was a problem for everyone.
” He went on to talk about how honorable it was to compete in such an iconic landmark: “It is an incredible feeling to jump here. The equivalent back home in the USA would be to perform in the garden of the White House!” Adams threw down his classic, yet dense bag of tricks including a 360 nac and an array of flip combos. However, it just wasn’t enough to stop the New Zealander teenager.
Norway’s Andre Villa finished third in Moscow remains in the overall lead in the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour 2010, 20-points ahead of Adams. Despite FMX Rider Robbie Maddison‘s famous long-distance jumps over London’s Tower Bridge and the Corinth Canal in Greece, he failed to qualify for the semi-finals after missing a landing on a flip combo-gone-wrong — nearly taking a massive soil sample. Maddo eventually finished fifth behind Japan’s Eigo Sato.
Following stops in Mexico City, Cairo and Moscow, the X-Fighters tour now moves on to the Plaza de Toros de las Ventas bullfighting ring in Madrid for the next event of the season on July 22-23 before the final two events of the season in London on August 14 and Rome on October 1.
