The new DuPont™ Motorcycle Degreaser for Chains & Sprockets extends chain life and improves performance by removing grease, dirt, wax and grime. It’s specially formulated and tested to work safely on motorcycles with sealed chains, including O-rings, X-rings and Z-rings.
“Maintaining a chain will make it last two- to four-times longer,” said Hank Krause, president of Finish Line Technologies, whose company manufactures the new chain cleaner. “When grit mixes with oil on a chain, it acts like sandpaper and accelerates chain and sprocket wear. It is important to remove this stubborn grime on a regular basis.”
DuPont™ Motorcycle Degreaser for Chains & Sprockets also performs well with dirt bikes, ATVs and go-karts. Made with non-diluted active ingredients that are biodegradable and virtually odor-free.
Cleaning the full drive train (the chain and sprockets) is recommended at least every 1,000 miles. Chains should be re-lubricated every 500 miles. The new degreaser works well in conjunction with DuPont™ Teflon® Chain Saver Lubricant as well as other motorcycle chain lubes.
To clean a motorcycle chain, spray the degreaser directly onto the chain. It takes about 60-seconds to break down and neutralize grease, oil and dirt. Finish Line manufactures the Grunge Brush® to scrub stubborn spots. When a section is clean, it can be wiped dry with a rag. Manually rotate the chain to spray down the next section until the entire length is clean. Water rinsing is not required.
“Cleaning a chain is a simple process that virtually any biker can do for themselves,” said Krause. He warns riders, “Never throttle the bike to advance the chain during cleaning. Keep the motor off and the bike in neutral, on its stand. Advance the chain by rotating the wheel.”
According to Krause, “Every time you degrease a chain, a fresh coat of lubricant should be applied. That will prevent friction and heat from building up and help protect your o-rings from drying out.”
