Freestyle Motocross: 2011 Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour in Dubai.

Red Bull X-Fighters Press Release

Freestyle Motocross: The world’s 12 best Freestyle motocross riders took to the air 24 hours before the start of the 2011 season opener of the Red Bull X Fighters World Tour in Dubai (UAE) on Thursday in the Qualifying session.

Andre Villa from Norway, who was on 2nd place in the 2010 World Tour, took top honors in the Qualifying. Six riders (inclusive Villa) earned a pass through the first round in Friday’s main event (8 p.m. local time) thanks to their strong performances in the Qualifying. About 15,000 fans are expected to pack Jumeirah Beach in Dubai on Friday. Defending champion Nate Adams (USA) is the favorite.

2011 freestyle motocross, freestyle motocross, redbull x-fighters, redbull freestyle motocrossDUBAI (UAE) – Adams won the 2010 overall championship even though he did not win a single event last year. “It pays to be consistent,” Adams explained. “I got on the podium at every competition. Except for Madrid, where I couldn’t take part because I was injured.”

As the season opener in Dubai on Friday evening drew near, there was a growing sense of nervousness among the riders – and also a sense that everyone is keeping a close eye on the competition. Who mastered new tricks during the winter break? Or who switched to an even more powerful bike? Or who switched teams?

Adams said: “I tried to prepare perfectly for this season. Obviously you keep an eye on what your rivals are up to. But only those who worked hard over the winter are going to be successful.”

Many Freestyle Motocross experts consider Adams to be among the top favorites this year.

Red Bull X-Fighters sporting director Tes Sewell (UK) said: “In retrospect, there were five or six different riders who could have won the Tour last year. It was more exciting than ever before and the season wasn’t decided until the final in Rome.”

Sewell is reluctant to make any predictions about who will be the one to beat in the new season that starts tomorrow night. “The important thing is that it’s exciting. The field has become so incredibly competitive and the gap among the riders has all but disappeared. At the end of the day, it’s going to depend on who manages to puts it all together at the right moment.”

The bookmakers have identified Andre Villa (NOR) as well as Levi Sherwood as potential title winners. The Norwegian Villa won an Red Bull X-Fighters event for the first time in 2010 and was only just beaten for the overall championship in a nerve-wracking final in Italy (Rome) by Adams. Levi Sherwood (NZL) won in both Moscow and London.

Adams put it all in perspective: “It’s almost impossible to know who’s going to do well this year before the first competition here.”

Jackson Strong (AUS) crashed heavily in Qualifying. While performing a backflip he over-rotated and wasn’t able to stay on the bike as it landed. He suffered only slight injuries.
