Glen Helen Raceway, CA – When the best motocross racers in the world converge on California’s historic Glen Helen Raceway on May 29-30th it marks the return of the top European riders coming to race in America.
May 25, 2010 – Glen Helen Raceway, CA - When the U.S. Grand Prix motocross rolls into California’s historic Glen Helen Raceway this weekend, the Yamaha guys will be out in full force. According to the scoop by Motocross Action Magazine both the MotoConcepts Yamaha team and DNA Shred Stix/Star Yamaha racers will be on hand to uphold American honor. In the premiere MX1 class, MotoConcepts is sending Matt Goerke (who missed the SX season due to injury), Ryan Sipes and Kyle Chisholm to ride the 450s; along with Vince Friese who will race the 250F in the MX2 class. Young Friese has been training with Ryan Hughes
Riverside’s Malcolm Smith Motorsports is hosting the 2010 United States Grand Prix Fan Experience in conjunction with Red Bull and KFROG radio. This unique event will provide fans an opportunity to meet the top MX1 and MX2 GP stars from Europe, as well as mingle with American MX heroes including Chuck Sun, Ricky Johnson, Broc Glover and Jeff “Chicken” Matiasevich on Friday, May 28th. The fan festivities start at 5:30pm with an appearance by the Red Bull KTM team, including defending World MX1 Champion Antonio Cairoli, Germany’s Max Nagl, Great Britain’s Tommy Searle and America’s own Mike Alessi.
“But why Glen Helen?”, you ask? Even though there will no longer be a National held at the famous (or infamous, depending who you talk to) facility, it is still one of the most gnarly tracks in the country, great for testing, and in case you still haven’t received or paid attention to the memo, will be hosting the first USGP there in over 10 years. Not only that but it will also take place on the same weekend the National was supposed to take place, so keep it on your calendar. If you want to see that Antonio Cairoli guy you keep hearing about, or those two 15 year-olds that are absolutely flying at the moment (Ken Roczen and Jeffrey Herlings) then be sure to pay a visit to GH the last weekend of May.
Few of the World Motocross Grand Prix participants were on hand yesterday, though, because they still have a round to do this weekend in Spain before making the trek across the pond. The few that were on hand you are likely familiar with anyways…the DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing/Yamaha crew. That’s right, it sounds like there is a very good chance you will see Max Anstie, Martin Davalos, and Broc Tickle line up for the GP, along with some other strong possibilities.
But Thursday was all about the Nationals. Riders such as SX Champ Ryan Dungey, Davi Millsaps, most of the Pro Circuit team, Ben Evans, Jimmy Decotis, all of Geico Powersports/Honda, and many more were laying down lap after lap, getting back up to speed on the outdoor circuit.
Glen Helen: Racing At Its Best Since 1985 -Located North of San Bernardino in the area of Devore, Glen Helen Raceway is set on 256 acres against a mountain side making for great course. Glen Helen Raceway started back in 1985, hosting several Sand Drags, Off-Road events and Motocross races. In 1990 Glen Helen Raceway hosted its first major event, the United States Grand Prix Motocross and again in 1991 and 1992. After hosting the USGP, the Glen Helen Raceway venue became an internationally known track. In 1995 and 1996 two more major events came to Glen Helen Raceway, the Off-Road Winter Series and the AMA 125/250 MX Nationals. Addition of these events to Glen Helen Raceway’s roster helped the facility become of one of the most seen and raced on tracks in the world. Today Glen Helen Raceway has added more race tracks and has put thousands of dollars into its facility, culminating in it becoming Youthstream’s choice to bring back the historic USGP race.
