Grenade launching New Motocross apparel line in 2011

Back in March of 2009, Grenade — famous for their snowboarding gloves featuring their iconic Grenade logo — announced that they’d be dropping a full line of motocross gloves.

They had already collaborated with Metal Mulisha on a glove that had been on the market a few years prior, but this marked their first major foray into the moto market, offering three different models of gloves on top of their Mulisha collabo glove.

Fast forward a year and some change, and it turns out that last year’s expanded moto glove offering was just a way for them to get their feet — or hands — wet in the motocross apparel market. On October 4, the brand Grenade, owned by Olympic snowboarder Danny Kass — publicly announced that they are expanding their moto collection to include a full line of riding apparel.

After collaborations with Metal Mulisha, Hart & Huntington, and So Cal brand Sullen, Grenade felt that they had gained enough clout and expertise to lace riders up from head-to-toe.

The gear debuted at industry tradeshows in August 2010 and includes two styles; the higher-end “Bulletproof” and the more affordable “Macadam.” On top of their new riding apparel, they also announced that they’ll be dropping six new styles of moto gloves and a full casual apparel line built specifically for moto-heads.

“We recognize that our target audience in the action sports community is involved in many different activities, moto being one of those,” said Grenade CEO Joseph Conderelli. “We did some grass roots market research and found that a lot of customers who snowboard are also into riding, and with several moto enthusiasts on staff and in our sponsorship program, we knew it would be a great fit for us.”

As anyone knows, the motocross apparel market is extremely competitive with well-rooted, super-brands like Fox Racing, Thor, MSR, and Answer basically owning the market. Then there are the other popular, but less prominent brands like One Industries, Shift, Troy Lee Designs, No Fear, O’Neal, Fly Racing, and more all competing for real estate on riders’ limbs.

One thing that Grenade is bringing to the table that can very well set them apart from the swarm of major apparel brands is their rider-owned, anti-corporate, punk rock mantra, which is stated on the “About Us” section of their newly-launched moto website: “This movement has been going strong for 7 years now.

We have never worn a suit to work a single day in our lives and aren’t about to start now. We are kids; we will never lose that. Even when our skin has turned splotchy and wrinkled we will still be listening to rock & roll and coming to work hung over.”

If you’re looking to veer away from the corporate companies that monopolize the motocross market, or if you’re just looking for something different to rock that doesn’t have an animal head embedded all over it, then Grenade gear may be for you. The new moto line is set to ship in February of 2011. Source: (ESPN)
