Continuing his domination of MotoGP, Jorge Lorenzo (#99) has taken his fourth first-place finish of the 2010 season in yesterday’s race at Assen, in the Netherlands. Travelers from around the world descended on Assen, many on motorcycle, with an official tally of over 97,146 fans.
Dani Pedrosa came second, while Casey Stoner finished in third, taking his first podium of the season.
Lorenzo now has a 47-point lead over Pedrosa. Lorenzo took pole position and won his fourth race of the season. Ever since Valentino Rossi broke his leg at the Italian Grand Prix, Lorenzo has been the hot favourite to win this year’s world championship. The victory made it ominous for the Spaniard’s pursuers.
The race was by no means a walkover for Lorenzo as he had to fend off a very strong attack from fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa who made a stonking start which saw him catapulting to second place from a lowly seventh place on the starting grid. Casey Stoner on his Ducati followed Pedrosa closely and for the initial few laps the trio of Lorenzo, Pedrosa and Stoner were separated by less than a third.
This order continued for a few more laps before Lorenzo and Pedrosa started to break away from Stoner. Pedrosa tried giving Lorenzo a good fight but once Lorenzo got into the groove, he left Pedrosa far behind.
Lorenzo went faster and faster on his Fiat Yamaha motogp and far from challenging him, Pedrosa couldn’t even keep
the storming Lorenzo in sight. Lorenzo extended his lead to over 3 seconds and rode home first, comfortably. Casey Stoner finally picked up his and Ducati’s first podium of the season at Assen on Saturday.
