450 MX Champion

Ryan Dungey raced to his rookie-record 10th 450 Class victory, winning both motos Saturday night in the AMA Pro Motocross Championship’s season-ending Pala Motocross National at Pala Raceway.

Dungey, the Rockstar/Makita Suzuki rider from Belle Plaine, Minn., broke the rookie record of nine set by Ricky Carmichael in 2000. Earlier, Dungey became the first rider to sweep the AMA Supercross and Motocross season championships

This young gun rider won 10 overalls this year – nine in a row – with 19 moto wins. That, along with his 2010 AMA Supercross Championship title, makes him the most successful Rookie ever.

“I didn’t get off to the best of starts in the second moto and I had to work,” said Dungey, who also broke Carmichael’s rookie points record with 543. “Patience definitely plays a role in it and I’ve learned a lot about that in recent years. It was new track and it was really good. It got rough and I think we all really liked it.”

Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short, from Smithville, Texas, was second, finishing third in the first moto and second in the second.

In the 250 Class, GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard, from Shawnee, Okla., finished third to win the season title. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson, from Scotland, swept the motos for his second career victory.

“There’s so many emotions and thoughts running through my head,” said Canard, who won five of the final seven races to overcome a 57-point deficit to Christophe Pourcel. “When the time came, I thought about all these hard years and it made it that much better. I’m still kind of dreaming right now. I’m just stoked.”

Pourcel, the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider from France, took a seven- point lead into the final race, but separated a shoulder in a crash in the first moto and was unable to race in the second.

WMX : With a win in the first moto, Jessica Patterson (DNA Shred Stix / Star Racing / Yamaha) locked up the WMX title over Ashley Fiolek, which was a good thing, because in moto two, Jessica went down, reinjuring the ribs that she’d damaged at the X Games earlier this season. Ashley Fiolek’s 2-1 gave her the overall, but Patterson’s 1-2 was good for second, and the sixth number one plate in her career.

In just two weeks on September 25-26, the stars of motocross from around the globe will converge on Lakewood, Colo., for the annual Motocross of Nations from Thunder Valley Motocross Park. Team USA will look for its sixth consecutive win and 21st overall win at the Olympics of Motocross with Dungey, Short and Canard representing Team USA.

Congratulations to Ryan Dungey 450 AMA MX Champ and Congratulations to Trey Canard 250 AMA MX Champ!
