Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda RC212V) made light of atrocious conditions in the British Grand Prix to achieve his third consecutive victory and take the World Championship lead.

Team-mate Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda RC212V) rode a well-judged race to make it a one-two for the Repsol Honda team. Last man on the podium was Colin Edwards (Yamaha).

Stoner gave the crowd a masterful display of inch-perfect wet-weather riding, taking the lead on lap two and never relinquishing it. Despite persistent heavy rain, blustery wind and rivers of water running across the track, Stoner never put a wheel wrong.

In addition to several aquaplaning scares during the race, he struggled during the early laps to see where he was going because water had got inside his visor while he was behind Dovizioso on lap one. His other issue was keeping the tyres warm – whenever he eased his pace the tyres cooled and lost some grip, so he had to stay on the limit throughout.

By half distance Stoner was 5.7s ahead of his team-mate. With three laps to go he started lapping other riders – a very rare event in MotoGP – and by the time the chequered flag came out he was 15s in front of Dovizioso.

This was the Australian’s fourth win from the first six races of 2011 and the success moved him into the World Championship lead, 18 points ahead of reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) who crashed out of third place just before halfway.

Dovizioso started brilliantly to lead the first lap, then after Stoner came past he had his hands full as he battled with Lorenzo and Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V), who had both qualified on the front row alongside pole-sitter Stoner. Dovizioso then found himself all alone after Lorenzo fell and then Simoncelli, the Italian tumbling as he braked for the first turn at the start of lap 11. Simoncelli was a victim of the deep standing water at various parts of the track which caused many a scare during the 20 laps. From that point on Dovizioso was able to control his position to take his second podium result of 2011.

This was Stoner and Dovizioso’s second one-two of 2011, following their identical performance at last month’s French GP.

The rain was good news for Toni Elias (LCR Honda MotoGP RC212V) who has struggled in the dry so far this year but was able to score his best result of in eighth place, just four tenths of a second ahead of Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V).

Stefan Bradl (Viessmann Kiefer Racing-Kalex) won his fourth Moto2 race of the year, giving a superb display, similar to Stoner’s. The young German led from the start and won the race by 7.6s to extend his lead in the Honda-powered series to a remarkable 62 points.

Bradl had two riders come past him during the first seven laps, but Scott Redding (Marc VDS Racing Team-Suter), who took the lead on lap one, couldn’t maintain his pace, and Mattia Pasini (Ioda Racing Project-FTR), who passed Bradl on lap six, only lasted another lap before he fell.

Bradley Smith (Tech 3 Racing-Tech 3) gave the sodden crowd something to cheer about as he came through from 28th on the grid to finish second, the rookie’s first Moto2 podium result. A brilliant first two laps moved Smith into 12th and he kept moving forward from there. While many slower riders fell by the wayside, the former 125 winner found grip where others found none. Vision was a problem as he came through the pack in the early laps, but once he had worked his way closer to the front he felt more and more comfortable.

Michele Pirro (Gresini Racing Moto2-Moriwaki) won the contest for the final podium position, crossing the line almost five seconds down on Smith and five ahead of last year’s Silverstone winner Jules Cluzel (Forward Racing-Suter).

After Redding had led the first three laps the Briton began to slip back, defending each position as he went, ultimately crossing the finish line in fourth for his best result of the year so far. Esteve Rabat (Blusens STX-FTR) was fifth, his best finish in Moto2.

After scoring a win and second place at the last two races, Marc Marquez (Team Catalunya Caixa Repsol-Suter) had a day to forget. The Spaniard grabbed his first Moto2 pole yesterday, but fell at the final turn in this morning’s wet warm-up session. His bike stayed on two wheels and arced across the track until it rammed into the pit wall at speed giving the reigning 125 World Champion’s pit crew a frantic two hours getting the bike fixed for the race start. In the race Marquez fell again.
MotoGP:
Casey Stoner, Repsol Honda: race winner
“At the beginning of the race we didn’t have a great start and I needed to wait for the tyres to get up to temperature. In the first few laps when I was behind the other riders I got a lot of spray up inside the visor and it was hard for me to see, or for me to push. At this time I was being careful, trying to cover my lines to stop them coming inside, then after five laps my visibility got clearer and the water drained away from my visor and I was able to start doing the lap times we were looking for and started to open a gap. I was just happy to stay up on the bike, it was incredibly cold and I was so nervous, because in these conditions it’s so easy to crash! We had a great race today in very tough conditions where anything could have happened, but to come away with a win is fantastic.”

Andrea Dovizioso, Repsol Honda: 2nd
“I’m really happy with today’s podium. It’s a second place that feels like gold. The track conditions were very tricky, with much more water than in warm-up this morning. We made a modification on the set-up to have more rear grip and then we did a very good strategy. It helped us doing two sighting laps before the race to bring the tyres up to temperature quicker. I had a very good start and then I was focused to manage the second position with Casey. I was braking very hard to close the door to Lorenzo and Simoncelli. I had a good rhythm, not too far from Casey’s pace, but he is very strong with these conditions so I preferred to manage my race the best I could. I want to thank my team for the hard work and the support. We need to improve the performance also in qualifying, but at the important moment, in the race, we are there. We never give up. With today’s second place we have consolidated third position in the championship and reduced the gap to Lorenzo. The season is still long so I’m confident.”

Toni Elias, LCR Honda MotoGP: 8th
“I am quite happy as I was hoping for a wet race to finish in the top ten. I could not have finished in the same position in the dry as we are still struggling with bike set-up. Anyway this is a positive weekend for me and the team because we have scored further points. I knew I could fight for a better position battling with Rossi and Abraham, but after some laps I had problems with my helmet: the visibility was not clear and a couple of times I had to open the visor. I think I took a brave start from 14th spot but I went wide in the first corner: luckily I was capable to rejoin the track proceeding with my race.”

Hiroshi Aoyama, San Carlo Honda Gresini: 9th
“It was difficult to get a feeling for the bike in the wet conditions in morning warm-up, but as the laps went by in the race I felt more and more comfortable. The end result isn’t particularly satisfying, but we got good experience on a wet track that will help us find a good set-up in the future. Hopefully we can do better next time out.”

Marco Simoncelli, San Carlo Honda Gresini: DNF
“I am completely distraught because it seems every week we line up ready for a top race and something happens to deny me. I had already had a moment in that corner so I tried to be more careful, but the front closed and I found myself on the floor waving goodbye to the podium once again. I am gutted! I’ll go home with my head down now, but tomorrow I have to start looking forward to Assen with the hope that this bad run is over.”

Moto2:
Stefan Bradl, Viessmann Kiefer Racing-Kalex: race winner
“That was such a tough race in really difficult conditions. I always prefer a dry race, so to win today is really great for us. I focused on myself and my own race and didn’t care what the others were doing. The difficult part was to stay concentrated for the whole race. Things are going well for us, but we still have a long way to go and we will continue working in the same way.”

Bradley Smith, Tech 3 Racing-Tech 3: 2nd
“Starting from 28th I knew I had to make a good start. Going into Turn Three I went right around the outside of about five people and just kept making moves. In the pack the spray was really bad and I couldn’t see anything, so I just got my head down and went for it. I had a really good pace, but I had nothing for Stefan. I tried to keep a fast pace and put some pressure on him but he was cool and never really made a mistake that gave me a chance.”

Michele Pirro, Gresini Racing Moto2-Moriwaki: 3rd
“The situation at the start of the race was really difficult because the track was so wet and I didn’t have much confidence. I managed to stay calm and lap after lap my feeling improved and I made up ground. I am really happy because I had never been to this circuit before and this is a really important result for the team. Hopefully it is the first of many! Thanks to the team and the sponsors. I’m really happy!”

Australian ace Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda RC212V) rocketed to a dominant victory at Catalunya. His third win of the year and his second consecutive success moves him to within seven points of series leader Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) who finished in second place.

Lorenzo’s team-mate Ben Spies completed the podium just ahead of Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda RC212V). Pole position man Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V) came home in sixth spot.

Stoner was the clear favorite after setting a lightning-fast race pace throughout the two days of practice. Even though he missed out on pole position – because he didn’t have the set-up to fully exploit the extra grip of the softer tyres – the 2007 World Champion was confident he could be more than competitive today.

Second behind Lorenzo at the end of the first lap, Stoner took the lead at the start of lap two and stayed in front for the rest of the 25-lap race. He steadily built an advantage until the midway point when he sensibly eased his pace as light rainfall affected the final section of the Catalunya track. Lorenzo – who was able to gauge his pace in the treacherous conditions according to Stoner – closed the gap from more than two seconds to 1.8 seconds, but as soon as the rain stopped Stoner re-established his advantage. At one point he was almost four seconds ahead of Lorenzo. Finally he crossed the finish line 2.4s ahead.

Dovizioso had a highly competitive, but slightly frustrating race. He was in fourth place almost from start to finish, chasing Spies throughout, but never quite getting close enough to mount an assault on the American. Dovizioso had Valentino Rossi (Ducati) briefly get ahead of him in the early stages and spent the remainder of the race sandwiched between Spies and Rossi, playing the tricky game of simultaneously attacking and defending. The result moves the Italian into third place overall ahead of team-mate Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V) who missed this race after breaking his right collarbone at Le Mans three weeks ago.

Yesterday Simoncelli scored the first pole position of his MotoGP career and much was expected of the lanky Italian in today’s race. But he got swamped by his rivals in the rush to the first corner and ended the first lap down in seventh. Simoncelli was able to overcome Nicky Hayden (Ducati) and get close to Rossi, but in the end he had to settle for a sixth-place finish.

Toni Elias (LCR Honda MotoGP RC212V) had another difficult outing, crossing the line all alone in 13th position. The reigning Moto2 World Champion raced a modified chassis for the first time, but struggled with both front and rear grip and will try bigger changes for next weekend’s British Grand Prix.

Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V) crashed out on lap four, taking Randy de Puniet (Ducati) with him. Neither rider was injured in the accident.

Stefan Bradl (Viessmann Kiefer Racing-Kalex) increased his points advantage in the Honda-powered Moto2 World Championship with his third victory from five races. It was another perfectly composed showing from the 21-year-old German who led all but one lap of the 23-lap race. Behind Bradl, the action was typically fraught with several riders tumbling out of the group battling for the lower rostrum positions.

Those incidents split the leading pack, leaving Bradl more than four seconds ahead of Marc Marquez (Team Catalunya Caixa Repsol-Suter) at the finish, with Aleix Espargaro (Pons HP40-Pons Kalex) achieving his first Grand Prix podium a further four seconds in arrears.

Bradl led from pole position, but soon came under attack from Julian Simon (Mapfre Aspar Team Moto2-Suter) who squeezed into the lead on lap two. The following lap Bradl was back in front again and although he was only metres ahead of the pursuing pack for much of the race, he never put a wheel wrong.

Things were very different behind the leader. Simon and Espargaro led the charge, disputing second place just ahead of Dominique Aegerter (Technomag-CIP-Suter). Kenan Sofuoglu (Technomag-CIP-Suter) was the big improver of the race, coming through from 17th on the grid to take third from Espargaro on lap 15. The following lap he was poised to pounce on Simon, but instead he clipped Simon’s rear end at turn 11 and both men went down heavily. Sofuoglu ran over the Spaniard who was later diagnosed with a broken tibia and fibula. Aegerter had fallen without injury a few corners earlier.

Those two incidents promoted Marquez to second and put Espargaro back in third. Simone Corsi (Ioda Racing Project-FTR) finished alone in fourth place, while four riders fought over fifth. That particular battle was won by Randy Krummenacher (GP Team Switzerland Kiefer Racing-Kalex), the young Swiss just ahead of Alex De Angelis (JIR Moto2-Motobi), Esteve Rabat (Blusens STX-FTR) and Mika Kallio (Marc VDS Racing Team-Suter).

Thomas Luthi (Interwetten Paddock Moto2-Suter) and Yuki Takahashi (Gresini Racing Moto2-Moriwaki) escaped serious injury when they both fell at high speed on lap six, after Luthi lost control, taking Takahashi with him.

After today’s Catalan GP the paddock is already packing up in preparation for the northward trip over the English Channel for the coming weekend’s British GP at Silverstone.

MotoGP:

Casey Stoner, Repsol Honda: winner
“We got a reasonably good start, but not as good as Jorge. I wanted to try to pass him early on, but had to wait until the end of the first lap. From this point I just tried to put in the consistent laps as we did in the practice sessions to see if he could stay with me. Fortunately I was able to open up an advantage without pushing too hard or feeling too much pressure. I was really happy, the bike was feeling fantastic and then it started to rain. There was enough rain there to make you think that it will affect the bike, and in the last corner there was enough rain to make the track slippery. As I was always the first to arrive to the wet area of the track, I watched what the others were doing [from the information displayed on his pit board] and if they had started to catch me then I would push and if I start to pull an advantage then I would back off a little. I’m just happy I kept the bike upright at this stage and I want to thank all my team at Repsol Honda for all the hard work this weekend. We now head to Silverstone next week where we’ll also be looking to fight for victory. I just hope Dani can make a return there also and I wish him a fast recovery.”

Andrea Dovizioso, Repsol Honda: 4th
“After the warm-up session in the wet, the conditions during the race were tricky, especially when it started to rain with 12 laps to go. I didn’t have a perfect start and this complicated the race. In the first laps with a full tank, I didn’t have good stability in the front. With the hard tyres the traction was not so good compared to Lorenzo, Spies and Rossi who were riding with soft tyres. Even if we improved compared to Le Mans in terms of lap times, I’m not happy finishing fourth, five seconds behind the winner. Today we were fast and I think that with a good start we could have at least fought for the podium. I’m sorry for my team as they worked hard during the whole weekend. Now I look forward to next weekend’s race in Silverstone, a circuit that I like and where I hope to get a good result.”

Marco Simoncelli, San Carlo Honda Gresini: 6th
“I don’t know if I held the clutch too long at the start, but it slipped and a lot of riders passed me, costing me a lot of time. After that I was unable to get back into the rhythm I had during practice and I was struggling, even though the pace in general was slower. I had a gap of over a second to the guys in front of me and I got it back down to three tenths to Valentino, but after a few laps I was taking too many chances in certain areas where it was a little damp and decided to pull my oars in and bring the bike home. Overall the weekend has been positive because after the pole yesterday sixth place doesn’t feel great but I have to think back to how I felt arriving here in Barcelona and be satisfied. I achieved the first of my three objectives from yesterday, which was to finish, so we will try for the other two in the next race.”

Toni Elias, LCR Honda MotoGP: 13th
“It was one of the worst races of my career because we could not even match yesterday’s lap times. We probably took the wrong direction as we have lost front grip and rear grip was really poor for the whole race. At the end we scored some points, but I feel bad for me, for the team and for my fans. There’s something wrong and we need a radical change because we all deserve a better result. We are working hard since the winter test and we will continue this way.”

Hiroshi Aoyama, San Carlo Honda Gresini: DNF
“It hasn’t been a good weekend for us and today I made a mistake. I crashed and took de Puniet with me, but it was completely my fault. I don’t know what to say other than I want to get to Silverstone and forget about this Grand Prix.”

Moto2 rider quotes

Stefan Bradl, Viessmann Kiefer Racing-Kalex: winner
“We made a very bad start to the weekend. We were struggling especially in all the long corner here, where we had problems with edge grip, so I was sliding too much. On Saturday morning I was very upset because it seemed like we couldn’t find the right way. But then we improved the situation step by step and in qualifying it was great feeling because I enjoyed riding the bike once again. The race wasn’t easy. Simon was pushing very hard and the lap times weren’t coming so easily. I concentrated on myself. It was a great feeling to lead the whole race and make a gap on the others. It was a difficult weekend but now we are happy.”

Marc Marquez, Team Catalunya Caixa Repsol-Suter: 2nd
“We didn’t start the weekend very well. I made a mistake and crashed on my third lap of first practice, which meant we lost 45 minutes of set-up time, so I have to say sorry to my team. We made the bike better step by step and we had some more settings to try in morning warm-up, but the rain stopped that. I knew I was not the fastest guy out there so I concentrated on getting a good start and tried to pass a few people in the first laps. Second position is like a victory for us this weekend and I want to say thank you to my team.”

Aleix Espargaro, Pons HP40-Pons Kalex: 3rd
“This is my fifth year in the World Championships and my first podium, so I am really, really happy to be here, especially at my home race. It is like a dream. The race was really difficult. I couldn’t find the same grip as I found yesterday, which made things difficult. When I saw Marquez and Sofuoglu arriving, I knew it would be a tough race, but then there were a few crashes and everything changed. I hope this is just the beginning for me – now we need to keep working.”

Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V) won his first victory of the year in brilliant style at Estoril today, shadowing Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) for much of the race before moving ahead in the final stages. Pedrosa’s 13th premier-class win and his first success at Estoril moves him to within four points of series leader Lorenzo with three of 18 rounds done.

Pedrosa’s team-mates Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda RC212V) and Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda RC212V) finished third and fourth, Dovizioso snatching his position from Valentino Rossi (Ducati) at the finish line.

Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V) rode well to seventh, but team-mate Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V) was out of luck, falling on the first lap after starting the race from the front row.

The race got underway in cool conditions, with the track none too grippy following two days of rain showers.

Stoner had a huge moment exiting the very first turn, then Simoncelli highsided three corners later at turn four (the first left-hander), which also claimed Hector Barbera (Ducati). Simoncelli was battered and bruised, but otherwise unhurt.

Lorenzo led the race from pole position chased hard by Pedrosa and the positions stayed like that for 24 laps, the two Spaniards just metres apart as Pedrosa watched and waited.

Pedrosa didn’t know what to expect because this was his first race since he underwent further surgery on the left shoulder he injured in last October’s Japanese GP. Following last month’s Spanish GP, surgeons operated to relieve pressure on a pinched artery that had been interrupting blood flow in the shoulder. The fact that Pedrosa was able to race to the finish without numbness or loss of strength seems to indicate that the op was a success, a huge relief for the former 250 and 125 World Champion.

Today’s race was a masterful tactical display from the 25-year-old. On lap 25 he drew level with Lorenzo and out-braked him into the first turn. Twice in the next three laps he broke the lap record to give his rival no chance to counter attack. Pedrosa crossed the line 3.051s in front.

Stoner spent most of the race alone in third to bring home valuable points following his DNF at Jerez where he was knocked off by Rossi. The Australian has struggled all weekend to get his RC212V working perfectly on this bumpy, patchy racetrack and lacked some feeling during the race, especially in left-handers during the early stages. A further problem was a recurring back injury, which struck him mid-race, putting him in serious pain and discomfort. Stoner has had back problems following a crash at the 2003 Catalan GP.

If Pedrosa left his move to the late stages, Dovizioso left his until the final seconds of the race. The Italian shadowed Rossi from the first lap to the last, apparently unable to make any inroads into his compatriot. In fact he had been biding his time and he timed his attack to perfection, getting superb drive out of the final corner to beat Rossi by 0.025s.

Aoyama won an entertaining battle with rookie Cal Crutchlow, the pair swapping places several times before the Japanese finally prevailed on the final lap. Toni Elias (LCR Honda MotoGP RC212V) had a better race day than he expected. After struggling in practice and qualifying he was able to ride well, attacking Loris Capirossi (Ducati) in the final few laps to finish 11th.

Honda MotoGP rider quotes

Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda: 1st
“I’m very happy for today’s win, but more than the win I’m happy for my condition and it seems that my surgery was finally successful. I was trying to rest my arm at times as it was cramping with 15 laps to go, I was riding behind Jorge and waiting for the numbness to come together with the loss of power, but it didn’t come! I’m just so happy to see that the surgery has worked. It’s been around six months with this and it’s a big relief. For the race, I was riding at my best; Jorge is amazing here, always riding so smooth and fast. I was trying to stay with him and in the end I felt comfortable and tried to make a move and I was successful. I’m very happy to win here, it’s my first win in this track and thanks to all the doctors, my physio and trainer because it’s been hard work and finally we got a win.”

Casey Stoner, Repsol Honda: 3rd
“We had a pretty good start to the race, but Dani moved across and I had to back off so after that I was challenging Marco for third position in the first turn and he cut me off which I’m not so happy about, then in turn four he crashed and I lost the tow to Dani and Jorge. I didn’t really have a lot of confidence in the first laps with the rear tyre, it didn’t seem to want to work so well especially on the left side, and I nearly crashed a few times so I slowed down a little. Then during the race at some point, I felt my back completely lock up on me and I couldn’t move for three or four corners, I was struggling to do anything and had no breath. I thought I had to go back to the garage, but thankfully within half a lap it eased up a little, got better and we managed to finish so I’m very happy to stay in third place today.”

Andrea Dovizioso, Repsol Honda: 4th
“After a difficult weekend we had a good race with the best lap at the end and a good strategy to overtake Valentino. I was riding at the limit during the whole race and Valentino was stronger in two or three points so it was difficult to overtake him. I pushed hard to keep contact with him and at the very last lap I tried to overtake him at turn ten, even if I knew that it’s a difficult corner to overtake. Then at the very last long corner I tried to overtake him inside, Vale closed the door so I tried to exit faster than him, I made it and I could overtake him in the straight with the draft. I’m happy of this result, but we are still too far from the first rider. We need to be competitive from the first day if we want to fight with Dani, Casey and Lorenzo so it’s good to have a test tomorrow where we can work on set up and electronic system.”

Hiroshi Aoyama, San Carlo Honda Gresini: 7th
“First of all I have to say thanks to the team because they have done a great job in changeable weather over the weekend here at Estoril. I tried to stay as focused as possible in the race, which wasn’t easy at the start on cold tyres but after about five laps I started to get confident with them and the bike. At that point I was able to be more decisive and after a tough fight with Crutchlow all the way to the last lap I was able to secure seventh place. It is a positive result but we will try to do better still in the next race.”

Toni Elias, LCR Honda MotoGP: 11th
“Well… it has been a difficult and hard race for me. In the beginning I have struggled a lot because the bike was pushing a lot in the front in the braking points, but then Capirossi and Randy have slowed down and I could catch them. I beat Loris and could have passed Randy with two more laps as my pace was consistent. I am not satisfied about my position but I am pleased with my performance because I pushed hard till the end. In my opinion we have got a big potential and we took a step forward on Friday so in tomorrow’s test we must develop the data we have gathered to improve the bike.”

Marco Simoncelli, San Carlo Honda Gresini: DNF
“I am really disappointed for myself and for the team. I had a warning from the rear tyre coming out of turn one. I also saw Pedrosa and Stoner have trouble so I tried to stay calm and decided to take turn three in a higher gear to keep the engine sweet. I did the same in the next corner to make sure it wasn’t too aggressive but in the middle of the corner with the throttle closed I was thrown out of my seat and that was goodnight. I am really disappointed and I don’t know what else to say. For sure it was my mistake and I have to be more careful next time. It’s a shame because I was fast! We’ll try not to make any stupid mistakes at Le Mans.”
