MILWAUKEE – Lean as wire, hard as iron and dark as a tar road at midnight, the new Blackline motorcycle is a Harley-Davidson Softail model pared to the bone.

The Blackline throws new fuel on a fire that burns across generations, an unquenchable desire to ride.

A rebellious creation of the Dark Custom movement, the Blackline celebrates three fundamental elements of motorcycling:

mechanical beauty, internal combustion, and the long black line of the road ahead.

The Blackline balances allegiance with rebellion, discarding previous conventions of color and chrome for a Dark Custom look that’s honest, functional and attainable.

Visual elements of the original bobber movement are combined with the raw, hand-hewn style embraced by today’s young builders.

Lean and Tight
The rear fender is bobbed high-and-tight over a slim, 144mm tire that emphasizes an authentic hardtail profile. The compact headlight and speedometer are tucked low into the wide, FX front end, and there’s just enough shine to make the black parts look blacker. Black-rimmed laced wheels complete a look that’s tough, tempered and undeniably Harley-Davidson.

The styling spotlight shines on a Big Twin engine dressed in black and silver, and on a fuel tank shaved smooth and low. Aboard the Blackline, the rider hugs the frame on the lowest two-up seat ever offered by Harley-Davidson, and reaches high for new Split Drag™ handlebars that bolt right to the top triple-clamp.

The Softail chassis utilizes rear suspension control provided by coil-over shock absorbers mounted horizontally along the frame rails below the powertrain, where they are out of sight. So while the swingarm section replicates the lines of a vintage hardtail frame, the Blackline delivers suspension performance and handling that are thoroughly modern.

The internally counter-balanced Twin Cam 96B™ engine is rigid-mounted within the frame, creating a solid connection between rider and the power that moves the motorcycle to enhance the emotional experience of riding.

Key features of the 2011 Blackline include:

NEWPowertrain styling

Powertrain is finished in gloss black powdercoat on the rocker box covers, the crankcase, the outer primary cover, and the transmission side cover. The cylinders are silver powdercoat with machined highlights. The derby cover and timing covers are chromed.

Rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 96B™ V-Twin engine with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), rated at 89 ft. lbs. peak torque at 3250 rpm.

6-Speed Cruise Drive® Transmission.

NEW Round air cleaner cover in brilliant chrome.

NEW Black Denim powdercoat frame and swingarm.

NEW Profile Laced Aluminum wheels with black anodized rims. Front wheel is 21 x 2.15 inches; rear wheel is 16 x 3 inches. Dunlop® D402 tires are MH90-21 front and MU85B16 rear.

NEW FX front end with black powdercoat triple clamps and black painted fork lowers.

NEW Split Drag™ internally-wired handlebars mount directly to the top triple clamp.

NEW Asymmetric five-gallon Softail fuel tank is clean on the left side, with a low-profile fuel fill on the right. Die cast “Blackline” trim panel flowing down the center of the tank is just high enough to cover the fuel pump hardware.

NEW Analog speedometer on a triple-clamp mount that also holds indicator lights. LCD screen on the speedometer includes low-fuel warning and “miles to empty” display function.

NEW Bobbed rear fender with combination stop/tail/turn lights in black housings, and a new composite license plate holder and light module that mounts on the lower edge of the fender.

NEW Raw forged rear fender supports are finished in Black Denim powdercoat.

NEW One-piece, two-up seat and passenger pillion. Laden rider seat height is 24 inches, the lowest two-up seat offered by Harley-Davidson. Gap between the nose of seat and fuel tank exposes the top of the frame.

NEW 5.75-inch diameter headlamp in gloss black shell.

Polished forward foot controls.

Over/under chrome shotgun exhaust.

Optional Security Package with Anti-lock Braking System and Smart Security System

Matching the color and angular design of the V-Rod Muscle model bodywork, the air box cover incorporates side scoops covered with woven wire mesh faor a meaty. powerful race motorcycle look. you cant help but think about the Detroit muscle cars from back in the day.

Adding to the clean, streamlined design of the V-Rod Muscle model are the front LED Turn signals, Integrated into the stems of the mirrors, these bright functional indicators are smartly combined with the mirrors to help shore up the front end for a clean, custom look.

Harley-Davidson PRESS RELEASE

Company to Assemble Select Models at Facility in State of Haryana from U.S.-Supplied Assembly Kits

Milwaukee, Nov. 2, 2010 – Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE:HOG) is moving forward with the launch of operations in India to assemble motorcycles for the Indian market from component kits supplied by its U.S. plants, the Company announced today.

The Company expects the CKD (complete knock-down) assembly facility to be operational in the first half of 2011.

The announcement comes as President Barack Obama prepares to travel to India on a state visit focused on trade and business opportunities between the two countries.

“CKD assembly operations in India are a natural next step for Harley-Davidson as we build our brand presence around the world,” said Harley-Davidson Motor Company President and Chief Operating Officer Matthew S. Levatich. “This investment will allow us to improve our market responsiveness and production flexibility while reducing the tariff burden, which we expect will drive growth over time by making our bikes more accessible to India’s consumers. Given the strong response we have received in the initial months of retail operations, we believe this is the right investment for this important market,” Levatich said.

To date, Harley-Davidson India has been importing completely assembled motorcycles from the Company’s U.S. final assembly plants. Once the Indian CKD assembly facility in the Indian State of Haryana is operational, Harley-Davidson India will import CKD kits for select current models, consisting of components produced by Harley-Davidson’s U.S. plants in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Missouri and by the company’s suppliers. Indian employees at the Haryana facility will then assemble the components into finished motorcycles. Other models will continue to be imported as completely built motorcycles for now.

India will be the second country in which Harley-Davidson has CKD assembly operations outside the U.S., after Brazil where the Company began assembly operations in 1999.

“We are committed to global growth and growth in India for the long term,” said Levatich. “India’s rapidly growing economy, rising middle class and significant investment in construction of new roads and highways are paving the way for leisure motorcycle riding.”

“We are building a strong foundation for our business in India, first by establishing a world-class dealer network, and now by commencing CKD assembly operations” said Anoop Prakash, Managing Director for Harley-Davidson India. “It is important for us to continue to invest in strategies that make our products and experiences accessible to an increasingly broader set of customers across India”

Harley-Davidson India commenced operations in August 2009 and opened its first dealership in July 2010. The Company currently offers 12 models in its 2010 line-up in India, available through authorized dealerships in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh and Hyderabad.

The new Harley-Davidson SuperLow model reintroduces the pure pleasure of motorcycling. Balanced and responsive handling help the rider and the machine glide through corners with smooth confidence.

Harley-Davidson's Brand new 2011 SuperLow!

A low seat height, the broad V-Twin powerband and clean styling complete an appealing package. The SuperLow is an open invitation to get out and ride.

Comfort is a key aspect of the SuperLow experience. A new solo seat with a deep, bucket shape and soft filler offers good support.

The shape of the seat and its 25.5-inch height make it possible for many riders to put feet securely on the ground when the bike is at rest.

A new handlebar is shaped to provide a natural arm position. Dual coil-over rear shocks offer 2.5 inches of wheel travel for a smooth ride.

Several interdependent technical elements play a role in the particular vehicle dynamics Harley-Davidson engineers sought to achieve in the SuperLow model.

Changes made to tire size and a new front fork angle give the SuperLow 5.7 inches of trail for outstanding steering feel and feedback to the rider.

“In engineering the tire-and-wheel design and steering geometry for the SuperLow, the team applied lessons learned in the development of the XR1200X, which result in similarly significant gains in maneuverability,” said Jim Hofmann, General Manager, Motorcycle Product Planning.

“The SuperLow is of course a very different motorcycle from the XR1200X, with a different mission, but the theme of achieving a precise balance of steering geometry, tire profile and construction, and suspension tuning is the same and equally successful. It takes just one ride on the SuperLow to believe it.”

The 18-inch-diameter front wheel and 17-inch rear wheel are fitted with Michelin® Scorcher® 11 radial tires. The profile, tread pattern and construction of these tires were developed specifically to enhance the handling of the SuperLow model. The new wheel-and-tire combination significantly reduces mass and inertia front and rear, which when combined with the tire design, improves steering response, and reduces steering effort.

Its low-profile radial tires, solo seat and long fuel tank shape give the SuperLow an appealing new stance that’s wide and low. With an MSRP starting at $7,999 in Vivid Black, the SuperLow is the lowest-priced model in the 2011 Harley-Davidson line. The SuperLow is also available in Cool Blue Pearl, as well as Merlot Sunglo/Vivid Black and Birch White/Sedona Orange two-tone paint.

Key features of the 2011 XL883L SuperLow include:

An air-cooled Evolution® 883cc V-Twin engine with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), rated at 55 ft. lbs. peak torque at 3500 rpm, has a broad powerband for easy get-away from a stop and smooth power out of corners.

The 68/29 (2.34:1) final drive ratio is matched to the rear tire diameter and promotes smooth acceleration away from a stop and at low speeds.

Equipped with Black, Split Five-Spoke with Machined Rim wheels front and rear. Rear wheel is 17 x 4.5 inches. Front wheel is 18 x 3.5 inches.

Michelin Scorcher 11 radial tires are designed specifically for the SuperLow. Front is 120/70ZR18; rear is 150/60ZR17.

39mm Showa® fork with 4.1 inches travel.

Coil-over pre-load adjustable rear shocks with 2.5 inches of wheel travel.

Seat height is 25.5 inches. Solo seat has a deep bucket shape and is easy to straddle.

The handlebar has a wide, flat bend that places the hand grips and controls in a natural riding position for outstanding control and comfort.

The 4.5-gallon fuel tank offers extended range and helps give the SuperLow a low-profile appearance.
Mid-mount foot controls.

Harley-Davidson Inc. said Tuesday it expects the global market for motorcycles to remain challenging this year as more consumers opt for lower-priced used motorcycles instead of new ones.

Chief Executive Officer Keith Wandell said he expects Harley’s shipments to be down 5%-10% from 2009, while the preference for used motorcycles and the weaker world economy have pushed year-to-date retail sales down 40% from the company peak in 2006.

The Milwaukee-based company said it is managing the business to address lower sales and is looking to renegotiate it union contracts to take effect in 2012, in hopes of matching weaker demand for motorcycles.

Harley’s retail motorcycle sales fell 8.4% in the U.S. in the second quarter.

The company is seeing a pickup in Spain, France and Italy, where sales are up about 5% from a year earlier, Chief Financial Officer John Olin said. However, sales of motorcycles in the United Kingdom and Switzerland are still falling.

Harley-Davidson said it plans to add to its dealerships in foreign countries to increase sales, including four new dealerships in China.

The company said the ratio of used-to-new Harley-Davidson on the market is 2 to 1, compared to the more typical 1-to-1 ratio. The surplus of used bikes also has pushed down prices of used bikes. “We will start to move to a more normalized ratio and we will see more new bike growth,” Mr. Olin said.

Harley on Tuesday reported a return to profitability in the second quarter as its financial-services unit righted itself.

The economic slowdown dragged the finance arm to a $90.5 million loss in the year-earlier period. This time around it had a profit of $60.8 million.

Harley Davidson Inc (HOG.N) reported stronger-than-expected quarterly results on Tuesday, helped in part by a rebound at its in-house finance unit, and its shares rose more than 6 percent.

But Harley Davidson warned that the motorcycle market would remain challenging throughout the year. First-quarter net profit tumbled nearly 70 percent to $35.4 million, or 14 cents a share, from $117 million, or 50 cents a share, a year earlier.

But excluding one-time items, Harley Davidson reported a profit of 29 cents a share from continuing operations. On that basis, analysts on average had expected 22 cents a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue fell 18 percent to $1.04 billion, excluding financial services. Analyst Ed Aaron at RBC Capital Markets said he was especially impressed by Harley’s gross margins, which were better than expected and provided “an important indicator of the underlying health of the business.”

The results included $26.7 million in operating income from Harley’s in-house finance unit, which snapped a three-quarter streak of losses as the performance of its loan portfolio improved and the cost of funds fell. Worldwide retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles declined 18.2 percent, a smaller drop than in the prior three quarters.

The brightest spot was international retail sales, which fell just 2.8 percent after posting double-digit declines for a year. Sales in Europe and Canada were both up slightly.
