Team Rockstar Makita Suzuki used the power of its Yoshimura-equipped Suzuki RM-Z450s to tackle challenging conditions at the Rockstar Energy High Point National in Mt. Morris on Saturday.
The weather was fine for the first moto at the notoriously-fast High Point track but a quick downpour hit just before the start of moto two, leaving the track extremely muddy and slippery. Ryan Dungey rode strong, grabbing a convincing second in the first moto, battling the tough conditions for a third in moto two and ending the day with a second overall. Team mate Brett Metcalfe suffered a couple of bad starts but was able to fight his way to an eighth-place overall finish.
Dungey was strong all day, with solid morning practices and great starts in both motos. The Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider pulled the holeshot in moto one but a little bobble put him back to second. Dungey proceeded to pilot his RM-Z flawlessly for the next 16 laps and cross the line for a convincing second-placed finish. In moto two, Dungey powered his Suzuki out of the gate again in second; however, a couple of miscues in the slick conditions put him on the ground and he fell back to sixth. Dungey pushed his RM-Z450 hard for the remaining 12 laps and was able to come away with a third-placed moto finish and second overall for the day. Dungey has moved into third place in the Championship points race.
“It was a good weekend,” said Dungey. “I had a couple good practices and we were good going into the two motos. I got the holeshot in the first but had a little bobble and got passed but was able to get back to second. I lost some time in those first few laps. All in all, I felt good. My Rockstar Makita Suzuki team made some changes on my RM-Z for the second moto, but it rained really hard just before the start, so the track was really muddy, slick, and very technical. I got off to another good start but fell twice in the beginning but was able to catch up for a third and a second place overall. It’s a good step in the right direction. We just gotta keep plugging away and improving in the areas that we can and be consistent and put ourselves in a good spot to be there in the end. Next stop is Budds Creek and I really like that track. I was able to come away with the overall last year there and I’m looking forward to another good result.”
Team mate Brett Metcalfe started the day with the sixth fastest time in the morning practices aboard his Suzuki RM-Z450. The Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider suffered from a bad start in moto one but worked his way to 12th at the end of the first lap. Metcalfe was able to fight through the field to capture an eighth-placed finish. In moto two, Metcalfe was caught up in a first turn pile-up and essentially started from the back on the field. He charged as hard as conditions would allow in order to work his way up for a 10th-placed finish and an eighth-placed overall for the day. Metcalfe sits fifth in championship points.
Team Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Brett Metcalfe raced his Yoshimura-equipped Suzuki RM-Z450 to a ninth-place finish at Saturday night’s 2011 AMA/FIM Supercross Championship fifth round at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, as reigning Champion Ryan Dungey suffered a derailed chain and was forced to retire.
Metcalfe piloted his Suzuki to a fourth-place finish in the first 450 heat race, then after a tough 13th-place start in the Main Event, he worked his way through the pack to score a ninth-place finish.
“It wasn’t one of my better days,” said Metcalfe. “Everything for me today was just difficult. But you learn a lot from these days and we’ll take it and move forward.
I want to thank the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team for sticking by me and we’ll just concentrate on Houston. I’ve always liked Houston and have generally done pretty well there.”
Dungey started the day with a strong practice and finished first in timed qualifying on his RM-Z. He grabbed the holeshot in his heat race and finished with a convincing win.
A mid-pack start in the Main put him in 10th after the first lap. But he kept his head down and was able to work his way through the pack up to sixth place by lap seven. Unfortunately, on lap eight, the Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider threw the chain and ended with a DNF in the. Based on initial observations, his Rockstar Makita Suzuki team concurs that the chain loss was a result of a rock or other foreign object in the sprocket or possible contact with another rider.
“Well, obviously the Main event didn’t go our way tonight,” said Dungey. “The bad part is that we had a really good day; a good practice and a really great bike setup. We won the heat and then ran into some bad luck in the Main. It’s a pretty tough pill to swallow because the entire Rockstar Makita Suzuki team has been working really, really hard. I don’t know the last time we’ve had a DNF, which is pretty amazing in itself. This is a tough one and I’ll take the weekend to blow off some steam for sure because we aren’t going to quit and we aren’t going to let this keep us down. The goals are still the same. We will be there at Houston.”
SUPERCROSS: Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey raced to third place at Saturday night’s third round of the AMA/ FIM World Supercross Championship at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
The 21 year old defending Champion led the 20-lap Main Event, held in front of a packed 41,000 crowd, for three laps before losing it to James Stewart (Yamaha).
The pair battled hard for 17 laps, swapping positions several times; Stewart eventually grabbing second place behind Ryan Villopoto (Kawasaki) after putting in a block pass in the closing stages.
After qualifying fourth, Dungey and his Suzuki came out strong and dominated his heat race with a convincing win.
In the Main, he grabbed a second-place start out of the gate just behind team mate Metcalfe and pulled into the lead by lap two.
His Suzuki RM-Z kept him in the front pack for the duration of one of the most exciting Main Events in recent years.
“I’m happy about the day,” said Dungey. “Winning the heat race was definitely a step in the right direction. In the Main, I got a good start on my RM-Z450 and we had to battle pretty much all race long – it was kind of cat and mouse. Overall, happy on the day; we just came up a little short. My Rockstar Makita Suzuki team and I accomplished a lot, so we can’t complain about anything. I’m definitely looking forward to Oakland and going to another new stadium. We’ll do some work this week and show up to Oakland ready to go.”

ESPN Interview: Ryan Dungey, the 2010 AMA Supercross Champion is excited for the added variety in the schedule. “I hear a lot of good things about it. It’s always good (for the sport) to be able to race at a place like that with that much history and the memories. It’s exciting to go into new places. You learn so much, too from the place around you.
” Ryan Villopoto was on hand at an October media day where the Feld MX group revealed their plans to convert the baseball stadium in to a supercross track. “It’s always a different track no matter the stadium,” Villopoto said. “It really comes down to the dirt as some is really soft while others are really hard. If it is anything like the dirt we have at other rounds in California, it should be good.”
